hmmm

So I was blissfully ignorant of the "Boobs on Bikes" parade and surrounding kerfufflism. Until I had to get across Queen St to Aotea Square at lunch time today. There were people EVERYWHERE! They were in my way!!! There was the Supersize My Pay march and rally in Aotea Square (clever idea that) then the "Boobs on Bikes" parade down Queen St.

Fascinating.

I have been completely peopled out for the past few days so I wasn't exactly in a crowd mood, and there I was stuck in a huge crowd. Luckily I had my camera and phone to amuse myself with.

The crowd was interesting. Far more so than the BOBs. For me anyway. Most everyone else seemed fascinated by the BOBs. I have no idea why. The BOBs were boring. Maybe the preceeding kerfuffle made the whole thing seem naughty and prohibited and therefore more exciting? I really do not know.

Anyway. I was a little disturbed. Not by the BOBs. Not by the lack of morality. I don't think it was immoral. The thing that disturbed me was the way in which the crowd seemed to perceive the BOBs - as something more than just BOBs.

And is it just me or do people seem to be getting more and more brainwashed and sheeplike?

Comments:
Nothing wrong with Boobs. Nothing wrong with Bikes. Nothing wrong with an Erotica Expo. But this was all about shameless marketing, and boy, were the suckers buying.

OK. So are you saying there is something wrong with shameless marketing? Or something wrong with suckers who buy into shameless marketing? Or both?

I'm curious cause I don't get the kerfuffle. Of course I don't get the suckers who buy into the shameless marketing either.

I was VERY bemused by it all. All sides seemed equally umm...whats the word... silly maybe?

I went and had a look at that thread at Farrars about it. I think people were arguing that because no blogging females had commented on the thread that they were against whatever. Which is not true for me. I wouldn't comment on that thread cause I'm really not that interested in the topic and I dont have a strong opinion either way. So not worth my time and energy!

Boobs are boobs and really not worth making a fuss over. But then I'm female. Obviously males are the ones who like making fusses over boobs ;)

Hi, Suze. You basically made my point with why you didn't comment, even if you don't see it that way.

And I agree, the crowd would have been disturbing. If I were there, I would definately have avoided it for that reason.

That is entirely possible. I admit I just skimmed the whole thread (rockstar supernova is infinitely more interesting - I do love the trashy reality tv shows when they are about something I am interested in ;)).

Well I guess me ending up in the middle of that crowd is what I get for not watching tv or listening to the radio or reading the newspaper! If I had known I could have avoided it :)

Luckily it wasn't upsetting disturbing. It was just a real eye opener - more like "are people brainwashed?!" and/or "I really don't get it!" disturbing. In some ways the parade reminded me of how people stop to stare at car crashes and how people talk about and are enthralled with the private lives of celebrities.

From the photo in the paper, there looked to be about 99.9% male onlookers, yet yesterday it was reported to be 80%. What do you think it was?

80% sounds better. Maybe even 70-75%? More males but not noticeably (to me). Maybe the males were in the most visible places (ie in the front and standing on buildings and things). I was hanging back and there were definitely females around. There were also males who weren't interested and/or just happened to be there for some other reason (there is a lot of construction work in the city at the moment).

I had a look at my photos/video and did a very unscientific analysis and came up with 77.8& ;)

Your description of people watching a car crash just reminded me of this wierd movie that I've seen twice on TV for some reason about this kid that gets into the porn business. There's this scene where one of the porn industry guys goes outside and finds his wife on her back on the driveway with a guy fucking her (sorry about that, there's just no other way to describe it), and there is a group of 10 - 12 guys in a circle around them just watching in that way. Really disturbing.

Was I saying there is something wrong with shameless marketing? Or something wrong with suckers who buy into shameless marketing? Or both?

My perception on the whole thing was that people seemed to want to make this issue about more than what it really was. It was shameless marketing, and people usually have a strong opinion against such marketing. Thus, their willingness to spin the issue to be about something else was either laughable or amusing. Cannot decide which.

No-one really answered the question posed that if it been a hard core sex parade in Queen Street in the middle of the day, then would that be OK? Would it be expected that people that did not want to see hard core sex on a float in Queen Street be reasonably expected to not be there?

I think the conversation may have been different.

That's because it is a different thing....well maybe on the same continuum, but way off the end.

"My perception on the whole thing was that people seemed to want to make this issue about more than what it really was."

But that's what people like to do it seems. Maybe it is a hobby. Maybe they dont have anything better to think about. Maybe they get bored without issues to make a fuss about.

For my part, I had no opportunity to attend this event, seeing I'm 12000 miles away and all... but if I'd been in Auckland I suspect I still wouldn't have been there. I like naked nubile women just fine, but would have been put off by the inevitable baying hordes of bogans who would have been there... Plus, the bikes thing totally passes me by too.
